My name is Apama'bo Anand Oszkar, and I'm an international student from Uganda, pursuing a Master's degree in Environmental Management at the University of San Francisco.

As the founder of Cloud-9 Youth Edutainment Centre, a social enterprise focused on community empowerment and environmental stewardship, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of sustainable water management.

A Personal Experience

In my hometown, I witnessed pollution's devastating impact on Rivers Osu and Enyau, which supply our local water treatment plant. The contamination drove up treatment costs, leading to skyrocketing water bills, the spread of waterborne diseases, and dwindling fish populations that once provided vital livelihoods for many families. This crisis burdened local families and ignited my passion for environmental stewardship, motivating me to seek sustainable water management solutions so that no family has to suffer from water-related hardships.

I took a proactive step and led community-based initiatives, including workshops, the Water Guardians program, and policy advocacy. I learned that protecting our rivers is essential for building resilient communities and safeguarding vulnerable members, such as children and the elderly. This realization inspired me to further develop my skills, prompting me to pursue a Master's degree at USF, where I am gaining expertise in creating innovative solutions for sustainable water management.

Overcoming Adversity

Leaving my fiancé and young son behind in Uganda has been the most significant sacrifice I've ever made. The emotional distance and financial strain of funding my education as an international student have been daunting.

Yet, I've persevered, working on-campus jobs tirelessly as a TA/Tutor for Environmental Chemistry and a Sustainability Specialist to stay on track. However, due to work restrictions for foreign students, my income is limited, and I'm facing significant financial challenges. Through this journey, I've become even more determined to achieve my goal of transforming lives through sustainable water management.

My goal is to raise $20,000 to cover my final semester's tuition and expenses. With your support, I'll be able to graduate and drive initiatives that integrate climate resilience, social equity, and sustainability. I envision developing innovative, sustainable, and equitable solutions for global water management challenges—empowering communities worldwide to thrive.

Like Dr. Maathai, I believe that environmental sustainability and social justice are inextricably linked. By addressing the interconnected challenges of water scarcity, climate change, and social inequality, we can create a more just and sustainable world.
