Help Oscar survive parvovirus infection

Hi, my name is Jack and I’m asking for anyone with the capacity to help my puppy Oscar, who’s fighting to survive a parvovirus infection.

My girlfriend and I got Oscar from a backyard breeder’s litter. There were signs of negligence while we were there, but we weren’t aware of the extent at the time. Unfortunately, the breeder didn’t get Oscar or his siblings any vaccinations, including for parvovirus, which he contracted before we brought him home. For those unfamiliar, parvo is a very serious gastrointestinal virus that has a 90% morbidity rate in untreated cases, and is still a coin flip for survival with intensive treatment in puppies.

That’s where we’re at now, with Oscar staying at an animal hospital for the next several days. The first round of treatments has an estimated cost of $6000 already, not including the cost of extended stay if he doesn’t respond to initial medical interventions.

We’ve not had Oscar long, but in the short time before the virus’ dormant period ended and his symptoms had him take us to the vet, we were touched by an intelligent and affectionate dog that we were compelled to take care of for many years.

While the circumstances of our boy’s illness are unfair, it feels like fate had a hand in us finding him. There were two other puppies from the litter taken before we came that most likely have parvo and would be deteriorating right now- hopefully their owners catch it. There are two puppies not yet adopted that definitely have it, and knowing what we saw when we went to take Oscar, won’t be given the needed care and are as good as dead sadly. If we didn’t get Oscar when we did, he’d be dead in that yard too, and we think he deserves a chance to live. If dogs recover from parvo, they have no lingering complications and can live normally. But, we don’t just want Oscar to live normally, we want him to have a special life with a family that loves him, so if you can help us make that possible, we and Oscar will be grateful forever.
