UPDATE (03/05/2022): Dear all, yesterday, our dad had a routine checkup with the operating team. This was done to monitor his progress, and remove stitches. He got a skull tomography done, which showed that a subdural hematoma is forming between his brain and skull (see attached image at the end of this post). This blood accumulation is increasing the pressure inside his skull and is considered a medical emergency that requires surgery urgently. As you can see in the attached operating procedure budget at the end of the post, we'll need around $4,500. Also, according to the surgeons, the surgery should be programmed for this coming Tuesday or Wednesday.
As for the surgery itself, this one should be much shorter, simpler, and less risky than the first one. Basically, the surgeons will open a small orifice on the front of his skull to drain the hematoma. There will be no manipulation of the brain, and he'll be in a regular hospital room (not in the ICU) for 2-3 days, so the recovery process should be much faster.
We have chosen not to increase the total fundraising goal yet, because we are still about one-third of the way to raising the original amount (for the first surgery), and we think it could be unrealistic and discouraging for potential donors to see that we are now even further away from reaching our goal.
We wholeheartedly request that you support us during this difficult process, be it through donations, sharing this campaign, sending messages of support for our dad, keeping us in your prayers. We know he'll get through this new obstacle! He's been making tremendous progress, can now walk normally, and is almost ready to resume his usual daily activities.
UPDATE (02/16/2022): Dear all, today our dad was transferred to a regular room in the clinic, after spending 5 days in Intensive Care. Thank God, the progress of his recovery has been very favorable. He is conscious, has all his senses, formulates coherent ideas, maintains his memory, and can move all his limbs. He is still under the residual effect of the sedatives that were administered to him during his convalescence in the ICU, and some cerebral edema also persists, which should decrease over the next few days. Our dad asked us to extend his heartfelt thanks to all those who have supported him in any way: through donations, words of encouragement, spreading the word about this campaign, and prayers for his good health.
As of today, the expenses of the clinic are approximately $28,000, and he will be hospitalized for at least 3 more days, so we estimate that the total bill will be over $30,000 (pictures attached at the end of this post). The increase in expenses compared to the original budget, as explained by the administration of the clinic, is due to the fact that our father's operation was more complex than initially expected. His surgery took more than 9 hours, and this meant that the anesthesia, the post-operative sedatives, the number of days in the ICU, the blood transfusion units, and the medications used, exceeded what was originally estimated.
In the coming days, depending on the progress of his recovery from a physical and neurological point of view, we will find out what care our father will require once he has been discharged from the clinic.
Considering all of the above, we turn to your valuable support to be able to cover the medical expenses associated with our father's stay at the clinic. We sincerely ask you to spread this campaign and make it reach as many people as possible; any help, no matter how small, will bring us closer to the goal and will be deeply appreciated by us.
We also want to ask you to keep our dad in your prayers, so that his recovery is quick and complete, and so that the result of the biopsy that was performed on the tumor is satisfactory.
UPDATE (02/11/2022): Dear all, our dad underwent surgery yesterday and his condition is stable, he is currently in the ICU and he is expected to remain there for at least 5 days. The procedure lasted around 9 hours, almost double what was originally expected, but in any case, it was completed and our dad was successfully stabilized. The medical team decided to leave a small fraction of the tumor inside his skull, since they considered it wasn't worth the risk of removing it, because of the blood vessels that were close to it. Biopsy results should be available in about a week. We are faithful that they'll show that the tumor is benign and the fraction that wasn't removed is not a cause for concern. We are also faithful that once our dad is transferred from the ICU to a regular room, and finally allowed to come home, his recovery will be fast and complete.

The procedure is expected to last 4 to 5 hours. We ask that you keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Our dad is in good hands, and we are trustful in God that everything will go smoothly, and the results of the biopsy will come out negative, meaning that the tumor is benign.
The clinic has agreed to authorize the surgery even though we don't currently have to total budget. We agreed to initially deposit an amount equivalent to half of the budget ($10,000) and then continue to make payments as the expenses add up to the total bill.
We humbly ask that you help us keep spreading the word to reach the campaign goal. As we have previously stated, all funds collected will be used to pay the remainder of the total procedure bill, as well as the post-op expenses (therapies, medicines, etc).

On February 4, 2022, Oscar Neira was taken to the doctor as his family noticed that he was disoriented and had an intense headache that wouldn’t budge... however not in a million years did he nor the family expect to hear that Oscar has a massive brain tumor.
Our father is a 58-year-old who has dedicated his life to his family and his students, working as a Mathematics college professor in Venezuela for more than 30 years.
A skull MRI (images at the end of the post) confirmed that he has a very large tumor in the back of his brain, that has increased the pressure inside his skull, and displaced many important structures of his brain. This is consistent with his symptoms: acute headache, disorientation, trouble coordinating his movements and calculating distances, and loss of memory and sight.
If you know Oscar, you know that he always had a piece of advice if you needed it and could always lend a helping hand. His ability to analyze the situation and come up with a logical plan of action was astounding. It’s quite shocking to see him in this condition of vulnerability.
His treating doctor has indicated that the treatment unequivocally starts by opening his skull and removing the tumor and that this should be done urgently. She even went as far as saying that it is incredible, given the size of the tumor, that our dad isn’t in a critical condition and is currently conscious. After the mass is removed, it will have to be analyzed to determine if the tumor is benign or not. Given the characteristics of the tumor, brain surgery has a high chance of being successful and not causing grave permanent damage.
As a family, we need as much help as possible, because, given the harsh circumstances associated with living in Venezuela, it’s not possible to operate our dad if the procedure is not fully paid for before he is admitted in the operating room. As you can see in the operating procedure budget that the clinic gave us, the expected total cost will be around $18,000.
All funds donated will be used to cover procedure and hospitalization costs, as well as medicines, therapies, and caretaking equipment needed for his post-op process.

ACTUALIZACIÓN (05/03/2022): Estimados amigos y familiares, ayer, nuestro papá tuvo un chequeo de rutina con el equipo de cirujanos. Esto se hizo para controlar su progreso y quitar los puntos. Se hizo una tomografía de cráneo, que mostró que se está formando un hematoma subdural entre el cerebro y el cráneo (ver imagen adjunta al final de esta publicación). Esta acumulación de sangre está aumentando la presión dentro de su cráneo y se considera una emergencia médica que requiere cirugía urgente. Como pueden ver en el presupuesto del procedimiento operativo adjunto al final de la publicación, necesitaremos alrededor de $4.500. Además, según los cirujanos, la cirugía debería programarse para este próximo martes o miércoles.
En cuanto a la cirugía en sí, esta debería ser mucho más corta, sencilla y menos riesgosa que la primera. Básicamente, los cirujanos abrirán un pequeño orificio en la parte frontal de su cráneo para drenar el hematoma. No habrá manipulación del cerebro y estará en una habitación normal de hospital (no en la UCI) durante 2 o 3 días, por lo que el proceso de recuperación debería ser mucho más rápido.
Hemos optado por no aumentar el monto objetivo total de recaudación de fondos todavía, porque todavía estamos a un tercio del camino para recaudar el monto original (de la primera cirugía), y creemos que podría ser poco realista y desalentador para los posibles donantes ver que ahora estamos aún más lejos de llegar a nuestro objetivo.

La clínica acordó autorizar la cirugía a pesar de que actualmente no tenemos el presupuesto total. Acordamos depositar inicialmente una cantidad equivalente a la mitad del presupuesto ($ 10,000) y luego continuar haciendo pagos a medida que los gastos se suman a la factura total.

La clínica acordó autorizar la cirugía a pesar de que actualmente no tenemos el presupuesto total. Acordamos depositar inicialmente una cantidad equivalente a la mitad del presupuesto ($ 10,000) y luego continuar haciendo pagos a medida que los gastos se suman a la factura total.
Le pedimos humildemente que nos ayuden a seguir corriendo la voz para alcanzar el objetivo de la campaña. El 4 de febrero de 2022, Oscar Neira fue llevado al doctor ya que su familia notó que estaba desorientado y tenía un dolor de cabeza intenso que no cedía... sin embargo, nunca imaginaron él ni su familia esperaban escuchar que Oscar tiene un gran tumor cerebral.
Nuestro padre es un hombre de 58 años que ha dedicado su vida a su familia y sus alumnos, trabajando como profesor universitario de Matemáticas en Venezuela por más de 30 años.
Una resonancia magnética del cráneo (imágenes al final de la publicación) confirmó que tiene un tumor muy grande en la parte posterior de su cerebro, que aumentó la presión dentro de su cráneo y desplazó muchas estructuras importantes de su cerebro. Esto es consistente con sus síntomas: dolor de cabeza agudo, desorientación, dificultad para coordinar sus movimientos y calcular distancias, y pérdida de la memoria y la vista.
Si conoces a Oscar, sabes que siempre tenía un consejo si lo necesitabas y siempre podía echarte una mano. Su capacidad para analizar cualquier situación y elaborar un plan de acción lógico era asombrosa. Es bastante impactante verlo en esta condición de vulnerabilidad.
Su médico tratante ha indicado que el tratamiento comienza inequívocamente con la apertura del cráneo y la extirpación del tumor, lo cual que debe hacerse de manera urgente. Incluso llegó a decir que es increíble, dado el tamaño del tumor, que nuestro papá no esté en una condición crítica y actualmente esté consciente. Después de extirpar la masa, habrá que analizarla para determinar si el tumor es benigno o no. Dadas las características del tumor, la cirugía cerebral tiene altas posibilidades de éxito y de no causar un daño permanente grave.
Como familia, necesitamos toda la ayuda posible, porque dadas las duras circunstancias que conlleva vivir en Venezuela, no es posible operar a nuestro papá si no se paga el procedimiento en su totalidad antes de ingresar al quirófano. Como pueden ver en el presupuesto del procedimiento operatorio que nos entregó la clínica, el costo total esperado será de alrededor de $18,000.
Todos los fondos donados se utilizarán para cubrir los costos de procedimientos y hospitalización, así como medicamentos, terapias y equipos de cuidado necesarios para su proceso postoperatorio.
