Help Launch Spayversity: A Veterinary Clinic with Purpose

Hi, my name is Sarah, and I’m the founder of Spayversity - a one-of-a-kind veterinary clinic in Puerto Rico that blends high-quality spay/neuter services and education for veterinary students.

Over the past 16 months, I’ve poured everything I have; my time, energy, savings, and heart into making this dream a reality.

Spayversity is more than just a clinic. It’s a place where future veterinarians gain real-world skills through mentorship, and where underserved animals in Puerto Rico receive the care they desperately need.

Why Spayversity?

Puerto Rico is home to tens of thousands of stray animals in urgent need of sterilization and basic veterinary care. Spayversity exists to meet these needs, supporting stray animals and the communities who care for them.

Why I'm Asking for Help

The journey to open Spayversity has not been easy. In fact, it's been one of the most challenging things I've ever committed myself to!

Seven months ago, after nearly nine months of working to secure the first two business permits, I signed the lease on the future home of "The Spayversity Veterinary Clinic", and began paying rent for the clinic location - out of pocket.

Since then, I’ve continued navigating the many slow-moving processes, red tape, and repeated delays, all while covering rent, utilities, renovations, and other expenses, with no incoming business revenue. Despite starting with solid funds, my reserves have been slowly drained, by unavoidable costs and the ridiculously long delays.

To give you a sense of the challenges:

Twelve days ago, after receiving my final permit, I reached out to four medical suppliers in Puerto Rico to open accounts and purchase inventory. As of yesterday, only one has finalized the account set up. The others are all still pending.

Meanwhile, a U.S.based supplier I contacted yesterday had my account set up and ready for purchasing inventory in as quick as 20 minutes!

12 days (and counting) vs 20 minutes! You can't make this crazy up!

This is just one small example of what it’s been like building this dream in Puerto Rico.
