Lieve lezer, 

Graag vragen wij uw aandacht voor het volgende: 

Vorig jaar hebben wij via een stichting onze jonge Podenco pup Santolina geadopteerd en met veel liefde mogen verwelkomen. In 2018 is Santolina in getraumatiseerde toestand gevonden op straat in de buurt van Madrid. Zij belandde uiteindelijk in een asiel en kwam via via bij de stichting terecht. Destijds was ze +/- 1 jaar oud. Ze is voor haar adoptie van Spanje naar Nederland medisch gecheckt, gesteriliseerd, meerdere malen gevaccineerd en gechipt. 

Ondanks haar trauma en de adoptie doet Santolina het fantastisch en heeft zij veel plezier in het leven. Omdat wij zelf geen kinderen hebben, verzorgen wij haar alsof zij onze baby is. Ze is het zonnetje in huis!


Helaas is er onlangs tijdens een routine controle een accuut levensbedreigend probleem bij haar ontdekt. Santolina leidt aan het zogenoemde PDA syndroom. Wat is het PDA syndroom? Er zit tussen de aorta en longslagader een ader die normaal alleen open blijft in de baarmoeder. Na de geboorte zou deze ader dicht moeten gaan. Dit is bij Santolina niet gebeurd waardoor haar hart veel harder moet pompen dan bij een goed werkend hart. Haar linker hartkamer is hierdoor al groter geworden. 

Het PDA syndroom is een aangeboren aandoening. Wij staan voor een raadsel hoe het kan zijn dat deze aandoening niet is ontdekt in Spanje tijdens haar dierenartsbezoeken en de medische check.


Hoe het ook zij, ze kan dus elk moment overlijden in haar eigen vocht - sterker nog, Santolina leeft al in bonustijd! Normaal gesproken worden honden met deze aandoening niet ouder dan één a twee jaar dus wij zijn extreem dankbaar dat ze überhaupt nog bij ons is. 

Maar ze moet met spoed geopereerd worden, dit had eigenlijk al veel eerder gemoeten!


De operatie houdt in dat er via een catheter vanaf de lies een Amplatz occluder via de aorta in de PDA ader wordt geplaatst.  Dit kleine tuigje zal de doorstroming blokkeren en het bloed terug in de normale richting laten stromen. De kans op complicaties is klein en de levensverwachting is hoog. Alleen zijn de kosten hiervan 3.500 euro. De kosten van de overige onderzoeken (hartwormen, consulten) zijn rond de paar honderd euro. Al met al komen wij uit op een bedrag van 4.000 euro.

Deze operatie zou in september al plaats kunnen gaan vinden.

Dit is voor ons een heleboel geld wat wij helaas niet kunnen betalen. Wat betekent dat onze lieve hond spoedig een pijnlijke dood sterft! Dit kunnen wij moeilijk verwerken.


Want soms weten we niet wie voor wie zorgt: Santolina betekent alles voor ons, het is niet alleen ons beste maatje als we verdriet of plezier hebben, ze zorgt ook voor rust, reinheid en structuur in leven. Ze zorgt ervoor dat we elke dag goed eten, bewegen en slapen, iets waar we vroeger veel moeite mee hebben gehad. Hierdoor is ze zo waardevol voor ons en geven wij haar al onze liefde terug.


Helaas kan de stichting helaas niets voor ons betekenen. Ze stellen haar goed onderzocht te hebben en dat dit voor het eerst in 12 jaar voorkomt. Bovendien dekt de verzekering deze specifieke kwestie niet omdat het een aangeboren afwijking is. 

Ten einde raad doen we daarom een beroep op familie, vrienden, bekenden en de maatschappij om ons te helpen.



Bent u bereid Santolina te helpen? Laat uw hart spreken zodat wij het hart en leven van onze meid kunnen redden. Wij willen onze lieverd echt niet kwijt.

We would like to draw your attention to the following:

Last year we adopted our young Podenco puppy Santolina through a foundation and welcomed it with much love. In 2018, Santolina was found in a traumatized condition on the street near Madrid. She eventually ended up in an asylum and ended up at the foundation through via. At the time she was +/- 1 year old. Before her adoption from Spain to the Netherlands, she was medically checked, sterilized, vaccinated several times and got a microchip.

Despite her trauma from the adoption, Santolina is doing fantastic and has a lot of fun in life. Since we don't have children ourselves, we take care of her as if she were our baby. She is the sunshine in our house and LIFE!

Unfortunately, recently during a routine check-up (2 weeks ago) they discovered an acute life-threatening problem. Santolina suffers from the so-called PDA syndrome. What is PDA syndrome? That’s a vein between the aorta and pulmonary artery that normally only remains open in uterus. After birth, this vein should normally close when the lungs are filled with air for the first time. This has not happened with our Santolina, which means that her heart has to pump an excess amount of blood more than with a well-functioning heart. Her left ventricle has already expanded because of this.

PDA syndrome is a congenital condition. We are puzzled as to how this condition could not have been detected in Spain during her vet visits and multiple medical checks.

Be that as it may, she could die at any moment in her own moisture - in fact, Santolina is already living in bonus time! Normally dogs with this condition do not get older than one or two years so we are extremely grateful that she is still with us at all.

But she has to be operated asap, this should have been done much earlier before she came to the Netherlands! She got her exercise like any other dog so we didn’t knew untill 2 weeks ago that any type of high energy performance could be lethal.

The operation involves placing an Amplatz occluder via a catheter from the groin up through the aorta into the PDA vein. This little harness (amplatz occluder) will block the flow and return blood to normal flow. The risk of complications is small and life expectancy is high. Only the costs are 3,500 euros. The costs with all the other examinations (heartworms, consultations) could rise up to around the total amount of 4,000 euros.

This operation could take place (if we could get the funds together) in the first or second week of September.

That is a lot of money for us that we unfortunately cannot afford at this moment. Which means our sweet dog will soon die a painful death! We can hardly process this.

Because sometimes we don't know who takes care of whom: Santolina means everything to us, it is not only our best buddy when we are sad or having fun, it also ensures peace, cleanliness and structure in our lives. She makes sure that we eat, exercise and sleep well every day, something we used to have a lot of trouble with. This is why she is so valuable to us and we give her back all our love.

Unfortunately, the foundation from where we got her can’t do anything for us. They state that they have examined her well and that this is the first time in 12 years. In addition, the insurance for pets doesn’t cover this particular issue as it is a birth defect.

In desperation, we therefore appeal to family, friends, acquaintances and society to help us help our dear Santolina
