Help Oluwafunso Stay Off the Streets

Hi, my name is Oluwafunso. But you can call me Funso.

I’m 22 years old. I live in New York City, after several years of being homeless in a number of states. I have an autistic partner, who has a very serious illness (long-term Covid), which makes it very hard for him to work—he suffers from severe insomnia and a few other chronic conditions.

I have been homeless for 2 years, and I have been trying really hard to recover from years of extreme abuse and emotional struggles. I even recently lost my Medicaid, for reasons I still can’t understand, which was providing really important medical care and therapy.

During the last few years, I was hurt by a lot of people who said they would help me. But their intentions were really horrible. When things got really bad, I spent many months in many different women’s shelters. And I don’t have any family I can turn to.

I am trying to raise funds in order to stay in my apartment with my partner and our two cats. I owe back-rent because I recently lost my job—we both were in shelters previously, and then we found a place. We don’t need anything fancy—we are content with the little place that we found.

I REALLY do not want to give my cats away—they are like emotional support animals to me at this point. I can’t imagine life without Mya (brown) and Oatmeal (orange).

Also, I don’t want my partner to go to a shelter. Life in a shelter for an autistic person is almost impossible.

And I don’t want to go back to the shelter, either. I’ve worked so hard to get this chance for a new start.
