I'm fundraising on behalf of an incredible young woman I've had the privilege of knowing since she was a girl.
Twenty-eight-year-old Olivia is a remarkable human with a rare, genetic condition and complex, medical needs. Despite the many challenges and barriers that come with her condition, Olivia has always met life with courage, warmth, humour, and a beautiful energy that lights up every room she enters, and inspires every person she meets.
Recently, Olivia's health took a devastating turn. Already facing ongoing and worsening mobility issues, she has now developed severe, involuntary movements that cause intense pain and threaten her safety, dignity, independence, and overall quality of life.
The situation is so bad Olivia can no longer engage in daily activities nor sit comfortably. The only position that brings any relief is lying on her stomach in bed, where she now spends most of her days. As a result of these recent, painful developments, Olivia has been hospitalized for more than six weeks in Kelowna, British Columbia.
Imagine spending that much time in hospital, with no answers, no diagnosis, and no relief! Her family (Mom Grace, Dad Matt, and brother James) have been told time matters; that the longer these issues go untreated, the higher the risk they may become irreversible.
After more than a month watching her languish in hospital, Olivia's family has decided waiting is no longer an option. They are now pursuing out-of-province and out-of-country medical options, including consultation and assessment at the Mayo Clinic to obtain diagnosis, a treatment plan, and the interventions Olivia needs as soon as possible.
While her family is grateful these options exist, they come at significant cost not covered by public health care, including
- Travel and accommodation for Olivia and her caregiver.
- Consultation appointments with specialists.
- Diagnostic testing.
- Development of a treatment/intervention plan.
- Medical coordination and follow-up care.
Olivia has a way of touching hearts and spreading joy. She is gentle, deeply loved by her family and community, and a wellspring of strength and resilience. Her family seek to give her the best chance at recovery, comfort, and quality of life, and are hoping you'll help get her the care she deserves.
Each donation, share and message of support gets Olivia and her family one step closer to answers, treatment and hope. Thank you for standing with Olivia and being part of her journey to healing and wellness.
