Recently, we appealed to the Kusimama Africa/NWS community for help with Olivia’s immediate medical expenses. The Kusimama Africa/NWS community came together to raise more than $2,000.

Every contribution mattered, from the smallest donation to the two major gifts that helped us reach our goal. Because of your generosity, Olivia was able to address outstanding medical bills and move forward with important medical investigations.

To everyone who donated, shared the appeal, sent messages of encouragement, or checked in on Olivia: thank you. You reminded us what community care and solidarity can look like in practice.

However, Olivia’s medical journey is continuing, and the financial needs ahead are greater than the initial amount we raised.

That is why we are launching this GoFundMe with a new goal of $10,000 to help support her ongoing medical care and related needs.

Olivia’s Medical Journey

Olivia has been struggling with health issues for quite some time. These challenges have affected her well-being and made it increasingly difficult for her to participate in the social justice activism and organizing work that has been such an important part of her life.

As part of her investigations, Olivia has completed an upper endoscopy and a colonoscopy. Her doctors have also identified complications affecting her reproductive health, including swelling and inflammation around her uterus and ovaries.

She has received a written medical report and treatment plan from her doctors, and surgery is being considered as a possible next step.

We are sharing this information to explain why continued support is needed, while respecting Olivia’s right to privacy. Some details of her diagnosis and medical circumstances will remain private, and we ask everyone to respect that boundary.

What matters right now is that Olivia needs continued medical attention, further treatment, and financial support to navigate what lies ahead.

Why Your Support Is So Important

Olivia does not have health insurance coverage.

In Uganda, access to health insurance remains extremely limited. The country does not currently have an operational national health insurance scheme providing universal coverage, and many people must pay directly for medical services.

Estimates vary by source and methodology. Recent reporting has put coverage at around 4% of respondents in one national survey, while Uganda’s 2024 census reported health insurance coverage of approximately 1.1% of the household population. The figures illustrate how limited access to insurance remains.

For people without coverage, the costs of investigations, consultations, medication, procedures, and ongoing treatment can become a substantial financial burden.

Olivia is also the breadwinner for her family. She is navigating her health challenges while carrying the responsibility of providing for those who depend on her.

The combination of ongoing medical expenses, the prospect of further treatment, and family responsibilities makes this a particularly difficult period.

We want Olivia to be able to focus on her health and follow her doctors’ recommendations without having to face these financial pressures alone.

How Your Donation Will Help

Our goal is to raise $10,000 to help Olivia meet her ongoing medical and related expenses.

Funds raised will go toward:

- Outstanding medical bills: Helping address healthcare expenses already incurred.

- Further investigations and consultations: Supporting additional tests, specialist appointments, and medical assessments recommended by her doctors.

- Treatment and medication: Helping cover prescribed medication and ongoing care.

- Potential surgery: Contributing toward surgical expenses if surgery is recommended and proceeds.

- Recovery and related healthcare costs: Helping with necessary expenses associated with accessing and continuing treatment.

The final costs will depend on the treatment plan and the care Olivia requires. We will share updates as appropriate while protecting her privacy.

Olivia’s health challenges have limited her ability to participate in activism as she once did. Right now, her priority must be her health and the treatment she needs.
