Hi, my name is Olivia, and I’ve been given the opportunity to participate in a summer study abroad program in Kyoto, Japan focused on Japanese language and culture.
Growing up in a Japanese household, I spoke only Japanese until I was six years old. As I got older and became more immersed in an English-speaking environment, I slowly drifted away from the language and culture that once shaped my everyday life. Now, as I’ve grown older, I’ve realized how important that part of my identity is to me. This program is a chance for me to reconnect with my culture in a deeper and more independent way—beyond my home and into the real world.
In the future, I hope to become a pediatric nurse. I want to be able to connect with patients not only through medical care, but through understanding their language and culture. I believe that being able to speak to someone in their own language can bring comfort and trust, especially during vulnerable moments. Strengthening my Japanese and cultural understanding will help me better support patients and families in the future.
Outside of school, I spend my time wrestling, coaching Tae Kwon Do students of all ages, and helping my family at home. These experiences have taught me discipline, responsibility, and how to connect with people from different backgrounds—skills I hope to continue developing through this opportunity.
While I have been awarded a scholarship, it will only cover up to $500 of the program cost. The total cost of tuition is about $8,150, and my flight is approximately $2400, leaving a significant amount that I am unable to cover on my own.
Any contribution, no matter the amount, would mean so much to me and help make this opportunity possible. Even if you are unable to donate, sharing this page would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and support my journey.
