Olivia has just turned 5 years old and is facing the biggest battle of her young life.
When Olivia was due to start school this autumn, she was instead beginning a demanding five-month course of chemotherapy, part of an intensive treatment plan designed to give her the best possible chance of defeating this disease.
Earlier this year, Olivia was diagnosed with aggressive neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. What began as a tumour above her kidney has devastatingly spread to her spine.
As a nursery and school community - where Olivia attended nursery and where her mum, Alex, works - we want to show our support. Olivia’s character and energy light up every room she enters, and watching someone so young face a challenge like this is something no family can prepare for.
The impact of this diagnosis reaches far beyond the months immediately ahead. Before starting treatment, Olivia had surgery to preserve her ovarian tissue, which will be frozen in the hope of protecting her ability to have children of her own one day. At just five years old, decisions have to be made not only to save her life today, but to safeguard her future.
For Alex (mum), life turned upside down in an instant. Instead of enjoying the simple, everyday joys of watching her daughter grow, their days are now filled with hospital stays, specialist appointments, complex surgeries, scans, and constant uncertainty.
No parent should ever have to hear the words, "Your child has cancer."
Yet through endless procedures, tests, and difficult days, Olivia continues to display remarkable resilience and a spirit that deeply inspires everyone around her.
As Alex stays right by Olivia’s side through every step of this journey, the financial and logistical pressures continue to build. Travel, accommodation near the hospital, hospital expenses, time away from work, and daily household costs create an overwhelming burden for a family already facing the fight of their lives.
