From West Cork to the World Stage: The Journey of Oliver Sugars
Due to the sailing class (Type of boat) Oliver sails he is currently completely self funded.
Oliver Sugars, a 14-year-old sailor from West Cork, is making waves in the sailing community. As the eldest of four children, Oliver's dedication to his sport is matched only by his resilience and passion.
Early Beginnings
Oliver's love for sailing began at the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club (DOSC), where he developed a deep connection with the water. This passion remained steadfast even after his family returned to Ireland, where he continued to pursue his dream.
Overcoming Challenges
Despite facing life-threatening anaphylactic reactions—surviving two near-fatal incidents—Oliver's determination never wavered. His commitment to sailing and sportsmanship remains unwavering, inspiring those around him.
Achievements and Recognition
Oliver's accomplishments in 2025 include:
Topper Ireland National Ranking: Currently ranked 6th overall.

Training and Community Involvement
Training with the Royal Cork Yacht Club (RCYC) twice a week, Oliver also sails with the Schull Harbour Yacht Club and is a member of the Bantry Bay Sailing Club. Beyond sailing, he is actively involved in his community as a member of the 16th Mizen Scouts, a player for Bantry RFC’s U14s Rugby Team, and a member of Muintir na Bára U14/U16 GAA Football Club.
A Legacy of Service
Oliver is the great-grandson of Harold Saunderson Sugars, an Irish international rugby union player, and Rev. Robert Trail, a Church of Ireland Rector in Schull during the famine. Rev. Trail is noted for his charitable efforts, including feeding the local people during the Great Famine, a story depicted in the TV series "Victoria."
Looking Ahead
In June 2025, Oliver will represent Ireland in the Topper World Championships in Medemblik, Netherlands, and in August 2025, he will compete in the British Nationals in Largs, Scotland. To support his journey, Oliver is seeking sponsorships to cover travel, accommodation, and equipment expenses.
