HELP OIF Veteran, Lee: Severe TBI in CA Wildfire
Donation protected
I'd like to introduce Lee Krich. He is a combat veteran with two tours of duty in Iraq and continues to serve in the National Guard. In his civilian career, he is a long haul truck driver. He was delivering a load on September 5, 2018, around 1:30 p.m. in California, when he encountered the beginnings of the Delta fire. A fellow semi driver had passed through the early stages of the wildfire transporting a load of hay, just before Lee passed through. The hay caught fire and the driver fell from the load breaking his back. Being a Good Samaritan, Lee stopped to help. As Lee tried to assist the injured driver, Lee also fell from the load from a height of about 15 feet. He fell backward, landing on the concrete median causing a life threatening skull fracture, broken back, and broken pelvis. The skull fracture was deemed a severe traumatic brain injury and Lee was placed in a medically induced coma. His injury caused his brain to swell and no clinical measures could control the swelling. The Neurosurgeon decided to remove parts of Lee's skull to try to save his life. He had a bifrontal decompressive craniectomy, they removed two pieces of his skull, on September 8, 2018. They put both of the bone flaps into an incision in Lee's abdomen for safe keeping. Lee remained in a coma until September 21, 2018. After waking, his ventilator was removed on September 24, 2018, and a feeding tube was placed. On September 25, 2018, Lee took his first steps assisted with a walker! Lee continued making progress walking with physical therapy for a few days, then another catastrophe happened. While staying in the shock trauma intensive care unit, he was allowed to fall out of bed on September 27, 2018, injuring his left foot. Lee is such a fighter, he overcame this trauma and continued with physical and speech therapy. On October 1, 2018, Lee was moved from ICU to a recovery unit with a 24 hour sitter. Yet another obstacle came up, transportation from California to Georgia for neurological rehabilitation. They said it couldn't be done, but with many days of perseverance, Lee was transported by a medical flight company with a critical care team to Georgia on October 8, 2018. At the acute neurological rehabilitation facility, it was revealed that, on September 5, 2018, Lee stopped breathing in the emergency room after a dosage of 4 mg Ativan and 5 mg Haldol. Shockingly, it was also indicated that he possibly obtained a left eye socket fracture from falling out of the bed on September 27, 2018. Even after all this adversity, Lee keeps on fighting. He was in acute inpatient rehabilitation from October 8, 2018, until he graduated from "boot camp" on October 26, 2018. During this time, the doctors ran many tests. One in particular, was a very painful test, to try to determine what exactly is wrong with his foot with no definitive answers. Also, amidst this time frame, on October 19, 2018, a cranioplasty was performed. The very skilled Neurosurgeon and plastic surgeon replaced the missing bones in Lee's head after removing them from his abdomen! He was once again in the intensive care unit from October 19th, 2018, until October 22, 2018. On October 26, 2018, Lee was discharged from acute inpatient neurological rehabilitation to start an acute outpatient neurological day program for 5 weeks. After this stage is completed, his team expects up to eight weeks more of outpatient neurological rehabilitation for at least three days a week. His medical team is still actively trying to heal his brain and his foot. He has several expenses (hospital bills, neurological rehabilitation costs, transportation costs, basic necessities, etc...) and faces many, as of yet unknown, expenses. He cannot work and is not receiving any funds, currently. If you could please share his story with as many people as possible, he would greatly appreciate it. If you are able to help in other ways, thank you from the bottom of my heart. If all you can do is tell someone about Lee and say a prayer, God bless and keep you! Lee is trying to get well so he can get back to helping others in all the ways he's been able in the past. Thank you for reading his story and sharing it with as many people as you can, may God bless and keep you! Thank you!
