Please Help the DeArcos Family Offset Medical Exp.

Thank you for your time and considerations of the needs of the DeArcos family. Currently their beloved husband/dad is in stable but critical condition at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck. I’ve set up this Go Fund Me page to help with the medical, living, and travel expenses that are piling up due to this very difficult time.
I know in my heart that not one of the DeArcos family members would ever ask for any type of help as they feel there are many other families in need, but I don’t know any other family right now that deserves and needs our thoughts, prayers, and financial help more than they do.

My name is Margaret (Kosiak) Williams and my family (Dennis, Graydon, Mya, Jackson, Ophelia, Alyssa, Grandpa Don Kosiak aka Dr. Don, and Grandma Franny Kosiak) are close friends of the DeArcos family.  We want to share with you the unbelievable struggle this beautiful family has endured for the past few days.

It began the mid-November when their Mom (Juana),  youngest daughter (Yulisa) and then their Dad (Martin Sr.) tested positive for Covid 19.  On the 20th, Dad took a turn for the worse and went to the clinic to be seen by a Provider where he learned that he was not just Covid 19 positive, but he was also battling double pneumonia, new onset Type 2 Diabetes, uncontrolled hypertension, and a possible blood clot in his lungs. The clot was ruled out at that time, but he was admitted to the hospital to provide assessment and treatment of his current medical needs.  He started to improve and was released home on the 23rd.

Later that morning, he suddenly had drooping to the right side of his face and was unable to use his right arm or leg. He couldn’t communicate with his family and they couldn’t pick him up, so he was taken back to the ER by ambulance. During his ER visit, he regained the use of his right side and was able to talk. A CT Scan of the brain was completed and didn’t show anything acute. He was then admitted back into the hospital for observation as his stroke-like symptoms were gone.

However, later that afternoon, the symptoms returned and it became clear that he was suffering from a possible ischemic stroke and would need a higher level of care. He was transferred to Sanford Bismarck for an immediate MRI of the brain, which showed a blood clot affecting his face, arm, and leg along with partial loss of vison in his right eye.

Unable to start the clot-busting medication because his symptoms improved for a short time, an Interventional Neuroradiologist had to go in immediately and manually to remove the clot and regain blood flow to the area so it was no longer being deprived. The procedure is called a Thrombectomy and took close to 2.5 hours.

The medical team was able to remove the clot, but they were unaware of how long the area had been deprived blood flow so it was unclear if he would regain use of his right side or if vison would return in his right eye.

Following the procedure, he became confused and at times combative, so they kept him sedated and intubated in the Covid ICU unit to ensure he remained calm and was able to rest. He was started on an insulin drip to control his very high blood sugars, and his elevated blood pressure and other vital signs were closely monitored.

During all of this, his family was not allowed to be with him due to Covid 19 restrictions.  I cannot imagine what he must have been going through at the hospital all alone and not able to communicate to anyone or possibly not even understand what’s going on.  It killed me to watch his family wait anxiously by the phone for any details.

They were informed that the next 24-48 hours would be critical. He may not ever regain his vision or the use of his right side, and would also have trouble swallowing.

On the morning of the 24th, there had been no real improvement. Additionally, they are concerned that he is not able to understand language spoken to him. He remained in the Covid ICU for another night, but finally family was allowed to visit, except for his oldest daughter (Yesenia) who tested positive for Covid.

On the 25th, after another MRI that showed no significant improvement, he was transferred out of the Covid ICU and into the Stroke/Neuro Unit.  He is stable, but remains critical, and is only allowed one visitor at a time, limited to only family.

The journey ahead is uncertain, but it will be a struggle due to the many medical, living, and travel expenses they are incurring, as he is currently 90 miles from home. He is the main provider of the household and now unable to work. He has two children in college and one in high school. His wife occasionally babysits, but due to Covid, is currently not able to.

Their oldest daughter (Yesenia) is considering moving home to do online classes so she can help provide for her family and care for her father as he will have a long road of rehab ahead to re-learn how to talk, eat, walk etc.

The family is so humbled by the outpouring of thoughts, prayers, and love that have been shown to them during this very difficult time. Please, if you can find it in your heart to also contribute financially to this family in crisis, it would really be a true holiday miracle.

God Bless you and your family for your love, prayers, and support, always and forever.
