My mom is one of the strongest people I know — the kind of person who always puts others first, even while quietly battling serious health challenges. Right now, she needs a life-saving liver transplant to survive.

We’re incredibly grateful that she’s been approved for transplant, but the reality is that the financial burden is overwhelming. Between the cost of surgery, travel to and from the transplant center, housing during recovery, and the long-term medications she’ll need to stay healthy, it’s more than our family can manage alone.

As her daughter I was determined to help in the most direct way possible by trying to become her living donor. Unfortunately, I was not medically eligible — and while that was heartbreaking, it only strengthened my resolve to support her in every other way I can.

• Transplant-related medical expenses not covered by insurance

• Travel and temporary lodging during the transplant process that insurance may not cover.

• Lifelong medications and frequent medical monitoring
