Hello,

My name is Octavia Ontiveros, and I am a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) student at Samuel Merritt University. I am currently a junior, nearing the end of my second semester, and will be entering my final year in Spring 2026. I am so close to accomplishing my lifelong dream of becoming a labor and delivery nurse, serving and advocating for families of color who often experience disparities in maternal and newborn care.

Since August, I have been facing a financial barrier that has made it difficult to move forward with my education. Despite applying for multiple loans, searching for a co-signer, and exploring every possible option, I have not yet been able to secure the support needed. It has been an incredibly challenging process, but I am doing everything in my power to stay hopeful and focused on my goal.

Currently, my tuition balance is $11,765. The Student Accounts Office informed me that if I can reduce my balance to $2,000 by November 17th, there is a possibility they could remove my registration hold and allow me to register for my upcoming classes. Unfortunately, they are unable to offer a payment plan, so the remaining balance must be paid in full before registration.

This financial hardship is the only obstacle standing between me and finishing my degree. I have worked tirelessly to reach this point; balancing demanding coursework, clinical rotations, and personal challenges; and I am determined to see it through. Becoming a labor and delivery nurse means more to me than simply earning a degree; it represents my commitment to creating a safe, compassionate, and culturally inclusive space for mothers and babies of all backgrounds, especially in communities that have historically been underserved and overlooked.
