Help Obby Recover from Emergency Surgery

Donation protected
In October of 2024 we took in Obsidian and Onyx for a friend who had an opportunity to work outside the country. After a fostering arrangement fell through, we offered to take in both cats temporarily until she returned home.

Both Obby and Onyx settled in well and they immediately felt like a part of our home and family. We came home one evening to find Obby was ill. After seeing he was making no improvement, we thought it best to take him to the vet where they discovered he had ingested thread. We were advised to take him to the Emergency Clinic where they confirmed via ultrasound that he had thread in his stomach and small intestine. At this point we had provided the owner with a few updates and she approved of our decision to take him to the clinic. The veterinarian explained that they would have to perform emergency surgery in order to save his life and that we would have to proceed immediately as his condition was declining. We were reassured that given his young age he would make a full recovery within a few weeks.

We couldn't fathom putting Obby down or that his sister Onyx would be without him. The idea of confronting his owner with this suggestion seemed out of the question. Given that it was a time-sensitive emergency, we paid the vet a large deposit in order to proceed with the surgery. When we first took in the cats we requested that the owner provide pet insurance but instead it was agreed upon that if any crisis were to arise the costs would be looked after by the owner. When we picked Obby up from the vet a few days later, we paid the remaining balance, totaling just over $9000.

Since then, the owner’s situation has changed and the costs could simply not be repaid to us. After a lot of discussion it was decided the best thing for the cats would be to stay with us permanently.

We're grateful Obby has made a full recovery and is now working hard to grow back the fur on his belly. We are thoroughly enjoying both his and Onyx’s company and look forward to providing them with a happy and safe home for the rest of their lives. Due to the unexpected nature of this situation, we need help recovering costs while we work diligently towards an emergency fund for both cats. Every penny will go towards this vet bill which included diagnostic testing, anesthesia & medication, and overnight treatment following the surgery.

Whether through donation or simply sharing this page, we are so grateful your support! Thank you so much for helping us save Obby!
