Help Save Oakley: A One-Year-Old Puppy Who Refused to Give Up!

Oakley is just a puppy.

He's only about one year old, a beautiful German Shepherd who should be chasing tennis balls, playing with friends, and discovering the world. Instead, he was wandering alone through the woods and roads of Trabuco Canyon, starving, terrified, and fighting to stay alive.

For days, people reported seeing him.

Every sighting broke our hearts because no one could get close enough to help him. He would disappear back into the brush, frightened and exhausted. People in our community became consumed with trying to save him. Some told us they couldn't sleep at night knowing he was still out there alone.

There was just something about Oakley.

We've all seen stray dogs before online hoping someone else would stop. But this time, a group of complete strangers came together with one mission: save this puppy before it was too late.

After days of tracking him and leaving food, one of the professional trackers in our group was finally able to safely trap him. We rushed him immediately to RISE Veterinary Emergency Care.

The injuries were devastating.

Oakley had a hole in his head, another wound in his back, one ear had been torn and one eye was completely sealed shut.

Based on his injuries, the veterinarians believe it's very possible he was shot. It appears a bullet may have ricocheted, striking him more than once. Whoever hurt him likely believed he wouldn't survive.

But they were wrong.

Oakley survived.

The veterinary team immediately anesthetized him, thoroughly cleaned his wounds, bandaged him, and started him on antibiotics and pain medication. He still has a long road ahead, including additional testing and ongoing treatment.

He's also heartbreakingly thin. A healthy German Shepherd his age should weigh close to 100 pounds, but Oakley weighs only about 60 pounds.

And yet...

The first thing this sweet puppy wants to do is love people.

He stands on his back legs, wraps his paws around us, and licks our faces like he's trying to say thank you. He actually hugs us.

Despite everything he's endured, despite the pain, despite the fear, his heart is still full of love.

We named him Oakley, after Trabuco Oaks Drive, where he spent so many days wandering before we were finally able to bring him to safety.

Today, Oakley is staying at The Teen Project home, where the young women who live there have completely fallen in love with him. They want him to stay forever, and he'll become The Teen Project's official mascot—a reminder that even after unimaginable cruelty, healing is possible when people come together.

His emergency veterinary care, medications, medical supplies, and treatment have already cost more than $4,000, and his recovery is just beginning. None of us planned for these expenses, but there was never a question. We couldn't turn away from a puppy who had fought so hard to stay alive.
