Help Oaklawn Renters Stand Strong Together

Hello everyone. We as Stomp Out Slumlords organizers have been fighting hand in hand with Oaklawn Terrace Apartments tenant leaders for a year and a half against the appalling living conditions that have persisted for several decades. We have been able to meet some of the most powerful mothers and fighters, because they have been the ones leading this cause demanding to live in dignified homes. When the landlords refused to lift a finger to improve the building, we decided to go on a rent strike, because we understand that the rich only pay attention when their pockets hurt. During the last few months we have spent all day in court, up and down the city looking for lawyers to represent us. The evidence already is on our side, and it lives in the apartments of the people we now consider part of our own families.
Our team is fundraising to help people fight their cases and give them the chance at dignity that they deserve. The working class tenants have been forced to pay a protection order by the court while our fight continues, as if the greedy the owners don’t already have enough money. All proceeds raised will be used on an ongoing basis to fight other cases of eviction and provide support by other meand to keep our neighbors in their homes.
In furtherance of this campaign we will be doing a fundraiser selling homemade empanadas, Elotes, and custom printed tote bags on May 10, 2-5pm in a location that we will revealed soon.

Nosotros como organizadores de Stomp Out Slumlords hemos estado luchando de mano en mano con los líderes inquilinos de Oaklawn Terrace Apartments por año y medio basado en las condiciones de varias décadas. He podido conocer a unas de las más poderosas madres y luchadoras, porque han sido las mujeres que han liderado esta causa para vivir en hogares dignos. Enojados y frustrados por la falta de arreglos decidimos irnos a una huelga de renta, porque entendemos que los ricos sólo ponen atención cuando les duelen los bolsillos. Durante los últimos meses nos hemos pasado todo el día en la corte, arriba y abajo de la ciudad buscando abogados que nos representen. La evidencia ya existe en nuestras manos, en los apartamentos de la gente que yo llamo tía, tío, primo, prima. Ahora estamos pidiendo que nos ayuden a recaudar dinero para ayudar a la gente a pelear sus casos. Una orden de protección compromete a los inquilinos a pagar a la corte mientras continúa la lucha para derrotar a los codiciosos, los propietarios que no les basta el dinero. Este dinero sería usado para asistir y cuando el caso se acabe, se usará para otros casos de desalojo y así continuar la lucha. Vendemos platos de comida, elotes y tote bags en Mayo 10 de 2-5 en una locación que pronto revelaremos.
