Help Oakland International Students Explore the Bay
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Susan Keen (she/hers), and I teach at a newcomer high school in Oakland called Oakland International High School (OIHS). We serve students who are brand new to the US as high school students, learning English, and often coming from interrupted educational backgrounds. Our students are incredible - resilient, kind, community-oriented, and overall amazing!
Every year, our school has a credit recovery program called Post Session. It is a 3-week period where students from 9-12 grade are all mixed together to participate in all-day activities. I teach a class called History of Here, where students learn about the history of different locations across the Bay Area and receive physical education credits by going on daily walking field trips. This year, we will be going to:
- The Golden Gate Bridge, and a history of the Ohlone indigenous people
- The Japanese Tea Garden, and Japanese internment during WWII
- Mission District, to explore murals that celebrate
- Chinatown, and how cultural groups create community in hostile lands
- A tour of SF City Hall, and how local governments serve populations, and how our students can participate in government
- And many more!
While our district and school have some funds available for these trips, we want to go above and beyond to create enjoyable and memorable experiences. Many of our students are graduating, and this is their first time truly exploring the Bay. We NEED some money, like entrance fees into the Japanese Tea Garden (which is $235!) or buying ponchos in case of rain, and we WANT money to pay for extra fun adventures, like treating our students to burritos in the Mission, or mochi at the Japanese Tea Garden, or supplementing school lunches with additional high-energy snacks.
If you donate to this GoFundMe, you will be helping 7 teachers provide field trip experiences they will remember forever for 50 students. Please consider supporting us!
