Our 8-year-old Alaskan Malamute, Nyx, is so much more than a pet—she is a core part of our family. She brings us joy on our hardest days, keeps us grounded, and has been a constant source of love in our home. Nyx has an especially deep bond with my wife, who is currently expecting our first child in just two months. Watching that connection grow has been incredible—there’s already a special kind of “motherly” bond forming between them and the baby on the way. Nyx has been right there through this entire journey, offering comfort, calm, and companionship.
For me, Nyx is also a registered emotional support animal. After multiple combat deployments overseas, she has played a huge role in helping me cope and find balance again. She’s not just a dog—she’s been a steady, calming presence through some of the most challenging times in my life.
Recently, our world was turned upside down. Nyx has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone cancer in her leg. After consulting with our veterinary team, we’ve learned that the best chance to save her life and give her more time with us is to move forward with a full leg amputation, followed by chemotherapy and additional diagnostic testing to monitor and prevent the cancer from spreading. This treatment plan gives Nyx a real fighting chance—but it comes with overwhelming costs. Between surgery, chemotherapy, imaging, and follow-up care, the financial burden is more than we can manage on our own, especially with a baby on the way.
