Hello everyone,
Meet our special pup, Nymeria. This sweet girl is a golden retriever/Dutch shepherd mix who loves chasing bunnies, butt scratches, and guarding her home. We adopted Nymeria when she was 6 months old, in January of 2020. She is a loving sibling to two cats, Boo and Kaisa, and her canine sister Sevvy.
On April 15, Nymeria had a nosebleed that wouldn't stop, and eventually, she coughed up a small piece of tissue. We took her to the emergency veterinary hospital at North Carolina State University, where the tissue was sent off for histological evaluation. A few days later, Nymeria was diagnosed with cancer. A chondrosarcoma had been growing in her nose, causing nosebleeds and trouble breathing. Chondrosarcomas are typically easy to take care of, but when located in the nose, they are impossible to operate on. Without treatment, the prognosis for this kind of cancer once it has started causing nosebleeds is three months. The tumor would eventually deteriorate her nasal structure, causing nosebleeds, anemia, and eventually making it impossible to breathe through her nose.
We were devastated. How could our happy girl possibly only have months left? The past year had been so full of changes. We bought a house, got married, and were finally starting to settle into forever with our furry family. We cannot imagine her not being with us for a few more of the adventures life has in store.
So we have decided to pursue treatment. With radiation therapy, the median survival time for dogs with this form of cancer is 20 months, which we believe is worth fighting for. Our vet believes that due to Nymeria's age (5 years) and otherwise good health, there is an excellent possibility that we could get even more time with her. Unfortunately, it is extremely unlikely that the cancer will go into complete remission, but we are full of hope.
So, we are reaching out to our friends, family, and anyone who just loves dogs for help. The estimate for Nymeria's treatment is $10,000. If we could raise even half of that, it would be a huge help. Please spread the word and help us keep our girl here just a little bit longer.
