my name is nym , i am a nonbinary trans person from hong kong, currently residing in new york city. i need your help !

in short , i am trying to raise a survival fund to recover from two separate gender-affirming surgeries in 2022. while recovering for up to 4 months out of this year, i will not be able to work or earn money from my current job.

i got some unexpected news this week - that my first surgery, with Dr. Andrew H. Lee, has been scheduled for 3/22 - this is much sooner than i expected ! i'm feeling both excited and very uncertain:

because these surgeries are happening so soon and so close together, i am less financially prepared to go without work or income than i'd have hoped. i expect the first surgery will prevent me from working for at least 1 month. the second, happening early this fall, will take me around 2 months to recover.

i am asking for assistance in reaching the above goal to cover basic survival expenses - housing and utilities, medications, food, transportation, and other necessities. during my recovery periods, i hope to find other kinds of work to sustain me as well.

it's important for me to go forward with these surgeries right now because it is the first time in my life that i've had insurance coverage for them. i am afraid i will not be able to retain coverage if i wait any longer. more importantly, i am tired of feeling unsafe, alienated in my own body. i have a chance to change that this year.

i've experienced gender dysphoria for as long as i can remember, and while other forms of transition have helped a great deal, my mind is now turning to further steps in my transformation. over the past year , my work and life have made especially clear that surgery gives me the best shot at addressing this lifelong estrangement from my body.

with a little help from you all , i'll be able to access something i'd dreamed of since i was little but had always considered impossible - a way through my gender dysphoria , a chance at entering more decisively into a different phase of life . i'm excited that i could soon learn what it might be like to move through the world no longer so scared for my safety and autonomy, to reclaim my sense of possibility , my energy , my imagination .

to have the support of my friends, family, and larger community to get through surgery would mean my health , my love, my whole life. you'll be sustaining me at my most vulnerable. i humbly request your help making this fundraiser a success - whether by donations or by sharing it as wide as possible.
