Hi, my name is Nya Harrison, and I am a senior filmmaker at Tulane University.
I am currently directing a film for my senior capstone called Loving Janie Eve. It is about a young African-American conjure woman named Janie (Eve) Evelyn who is forced to reckon with her past love when she discovers a spell to revive her late girlfriend- two days before her wedding. She must decide if her late girlfriend is the one, and if she’s messing with powers beyond her control.
This project is very important me because it is a unique culmination of everything I love and everything I am: black, southern, and a supernatural enthusiast. Loving Janie Eve is a homecoming for me as it is a chance to honor New Orleans, one of my family's ancestral cities.
Janie’s magic and bloodline is my way of bringing my people’s history and culture into film in a way that is very rarely seen on screen. I want to honor my Louisianan ancestors and incorporate voodoo culture in a way that isn’t villainized or demonized, and make healing art for black and brown women who choose to be open and vulnerable despite society punishing them for it.
The money raised will go towards new orleans voodoo production design, costuming, and paying my lovely actors! Please help make this dream a reality! Every little bit counts! Thank you so much!
