Numan just turned 19. He lives in El Salvador and was born with an extremely rare genetic liver disorder called Crigler-Najjar Syndrome (CNS). This condition causes the body to produce high levels of toxic bilirubin in the blood, which can cause brain damage or death without the proper treatment. There are only about 100 known cases of CNS worldwide. Numan is the only registered case of CNS in El Salvador.
Information About Crigler Najjar Syndrome
Numan has to spend at least 10 - 12 hours under intensive phototherapy each day to keep his bilirubin levels down. As soon as the sun sets or on days with bad weather, he immediately has to get under the lights with an eye mask to protect his eyes from the harsh UV rays. The years of constant exposure to the UV rays have caused his skin to thicken abnormally and can cause retinal damage. Some days, the electricity suddenly shuts down in his part of town and he is left without his lights for risky periods of time. This condition and the treatment prevents him from having a normal life.

Despite this awful condition and the impoverished town he lives in, Numan still thrives. He enjoys participating in traditional Salvadoran folklorico performances and he recently graduated from high school with excellent grades.
The special bilirubin blue lights he uses for his phototherapy were discontinued in 2012. My family and I have been ordering these lights for him for years (we contacted Numan and his family after watching a news segment about his condition in 2008 and he has been our distant godson since then), but the light suppliers we buy from have let us know that their stocks are running low or are completely sold out. Once they're gone, it's going to be extremely difficult for Numan to get the phototherapy he needs to live. Numan's doctor, Roberto A. Zablah, says the only treatment that could save his life is a liver transplant.
Fortunately, Numan's older sister has offered to donate part of her liver to him. A liver transplant costs approximately $350,000. We are trying to raise that money so Numan can finally receive the transplant he desperately needs to have a healthy, normal life.
