Help Me Recover From NYPD Police Violence

Donation protected

I was featured on Vice News. However, because of time, they can only cover part of the story. So here's the rest of it:

On May 31, 2020, NYPD locked me up for being at a protest as a member of the Free Press. I was knocked off my bike while trying to escape (they gave me a combined warning + tackle when I wasn't moving because I couldn't react to the warning fast enough.) and was on the ground with three officers on my back. They arrested me and tossed my phone, battery pack, helmet, & bike to the side to get rolled over by the FDNY.

While the NYPD let me go without any charges (because the arresting officer didn't see anything worth talking about... but then again, he wasn't even one of the three officers that knocked me down), they have PURPOSELY destroyed a bunch of my equipment during the arrest, which included:

1) A $2000 Electic Bike (rented)
2) A Moto Z4, valued at $499.
3) A Bike Helmet
4) A USB-C Battery Pack
5) A Bike helmet.
6) My state ID.

For the month of June (June 1st was my birthday, FYI), I spent my time recovering from my injuries and discovering that my credit card was damaged by the cops, forcing me to spend money out of pocket on bills, a doctor's visit, a low-cost replacement phone that isn't anywhere near as powerful as the one the police damaged to try and piecemeal back my life together.

I work as a freelancer, doing multiple jobs without a boss to report to. While this is great, it's always tied to my phone. Because of all the money I spent, I am now short of saving up for moving to a new place and have to start over again. Also, I have several episodes where the police attack is causing me to have doubts in myself and I'm suffering from bouts of depression + panic attacks when I see police officers that cause me to find alternative routes as to not draw attention to myself. While this helps, it also makes for longer times spent on the job or running basic errands.

I live with roommates, but the environment is far from supportive as the house is overcrowded with one bathroom and no room in the fridge. Also, I live in a middle of a railroad house, in a food desert section of Brooklyn, so I don't have access to things like sunlight and a window for fresh air, which throws off my already messy sleeping schedule.

This Fundraiser is to help me do three things:

1) Get a phone to help me almost go back to the way things were before May 31st where I was doing gigs to help me make money. The phone cannot be a cheap phone, but at the same time, I don't need a high-end phone. My insurance is currently looking into it, but it could be a month before I get any action on it.  The phone will enable me to remain financially independent.

2) Moving money. I need to live in a different place. This was my goal for the month before May 31, but because I have to take days off and I used the money I saved up, I lost time I can't get back thanks to the recovery efforts. The money I'm making now (when I could work) is to maintain where I live. I need to be in a better spot to help decrease my stress. I'm looking to move to a place that has at least fewer roommates or an affordable studio if one exists in the NYC area. But I need at least a deposit + 1 month's rent, maybe 2 if I budget it right.

3) Therapy + Doctor's bill. I am using free resources, but sadly, there are limits to what they can provide as far as my overall mental well-being. Also, some resources report to authorities, which means that I can't outright trust them with sensitive information. I need professional help and this will at least get me 3 months worth of it. Also, I need to cover part of the physician's bill for the upcoming month.

Total:

* Phone = $600 (unlocked phone + 2 years insurance.)
* New Place = $3000
* Therapy = $65/week * 3 months + past $100 doctor's visit = $880

The total cost ($4480) plus GoFundMe Fees ($220 roughly) = $4800

I believe in asking for just enough and not more. So, this is the amount I need to at least recover from it.

Please, help me if you can.

Funds over the limit will be used to cover additional months for therapy & cover GoFundMe fees. I don't believe the problems opened by a lack of coverage will be covered within three months, but I need enough to at least start on my own without worrying about the bottom line. No funds will be collected for the bike because this matter was taken care of by the rental shop. I have Citibike which I can use as a backup and will start rental again once I obtain enough money I earned from working. However, I won't make as much money as I usually do because I have to get over my panic attacks.
