Help Nox fight IMHA

Final Goal - $5,000
Our dog Nox, a three year old Border Collie, has been in and out of the ICU all of January. He was diagnosed with IMHA (autoimmune anemia), and has had some treatment complications leading to liver infection and severe hyperglycemia. He is still undergoing treatment and the costs so far have exceeded $20k. If we get him into remission the specialist said 90% of IMHA dogs live a long and happy life.

We are fundraising to help cover current and future medical expenses, any donations are extremely appreciated, please also give your thoughts and prayers for our baby boy in hopes that he gets well soon.

For more details on his story, please read below:

On January 7th, Nox was rushed to the ER for the first time, in need of a blood transfusion as he was severely anemic(PCV 11%) and unsure he would make it through the night because his organs weren't receiving the oxygen they needed.

After receiving his first transfusion, Nox stayed in the hospital for three days and was then allowed to come home. After a couple days at home, we had to rush him back to the ER for a second transfusion because he was showing symptoms of severe anemia again, and the ER confirmed his PCV (red blood cell volume) had dropped back down to critical levels again (11%).

Nox stayed two more nights in the ICU, then was stable enough from the second transfusion and his list of new medications that he was able to come home again on January 16th. We had daily follow ups with the critical care team in Cincinnati and tests began to show red blood cell regeneration (good news), meaning his body was finally beginning to regenerate some of the cells he had lost.

After five more days at home, he had a visit Friday January 23rd and they found a potential liver infection through ultrasound and a liver panel, but it was determined we could try to treat it through multiple antibiotics and still allow him to be at home. However, the infection caused severe hyperglycemia and he had to be taken back to the ER on Saturday the 24th because he was not eating or taking his medications, and was refusing to get up and move around.

At the time of writing this, he is still in the ICU and has been since Saturday the 24th, where they are treating him with insulin and IV antibiotics. We may be able to bring him home tomorrow (Wednesday, January 28th), but he will be on a wide list of medications for the next 6-12 months and we can only hope that he doesn't experience further complications or anemic relapse.

Our specialist has assured us that only 5-15% of IMHA cases have a relapse, or secondary anemic event once they are considered in remission from the initial case. We hate to ask for help because we know everyone has their own life problems, but we don't want to give up on Nox and will do everything we can to get him through this, especially knowing that he can have such a long healthy life afterward.

Thanks so much for reading Nox's story, we will continue to update this as we know more.
