In the face of raging wildfires, Northern Reach Rescue Network is on the front lines helping displaced families and their animals.

As devastating wildfires sweep through Northern Ontario, entire First Nations communities are being evacuated. Families are forced to leave their homes with little notice, often facing the heartbreaking choice of what to do with their pets. Many refuse to abandon their 4-legged family members, but evacuation plans rarely include animals, leaving pets vulnerable, stranded, or in need of urgent care.15a251

Northern Reach Rescue Network (NRN) has been a lifeline for these animals and the people who love them since 2014. Founded by the late Darlene Vezina, we are a fully volunteer-driven, registered Canadian charity (no paid staff, no shelter building) operating out of Thunder Bay, the hub of the North. We work closely with remote fly-in communities to:

Rescue and provide emergency veterinary care for sick, injured, stray, or surrendered dogs and cats.

Supply food, pet care essentials, and support to communities (including those with humans evacuated but animals left behind).

Temporarily foster animals in volunteer homes.

Coordinate flights and transports to partner rescues in Southern Ontario for adoption into loving forever homes.b31c1a

Over the years, we've helped over 8,000 animals. But right now, the need is overwhelming. Wildfires have triggered mass evacuations, with dozens to 80+ animals potentially arriving at once. Our foster homes are stretched thin, supplies are flying out the door, and we're sending food north while caring for incoming pets here.8cc134
