Let me tell you a little about Norm Doucette. Norm is 64 years old, married to a beautiful woman named Karen, the father of 3 beautiful girls (Ashtyn, Karleigh and Alexandria) and soon to be the proud grandfather of baby Graysen. He has 44 years’ experience as a professional men’s hairstylist. After years of building up a solid base of clientele; and in the heat of a pandemic, he decided to fly solo. He launched his own business!! His strength and perseverance in life comes as no shock to anyone that knows him.
When Norm was just 44 years old; on a pool tournament trip to Las Vegas he went into cardiac arrest. After some time in a Las Vegas hospital he was able to make it home to begin his recovery. After 7 months on the heart transplant list; their prayers were answered and a match was found. On August 25th, 2001, Norm was given a second shot at life.
For years things were great. Norm’s body accepted the new heart and life was grand. He was busy in the salon, Karen was successfully working, and the girls were flourishing into lovely young ladies. Well, if life didn’t throw them another curveball. At the age of 49 on April 26, 2018, Karen suffered 6 small strokes and 1 massive stroke. After months of rehabilitation, the loving support from Norm, the girls, family and friends; Karen now leads a life of independence. However; because of the severity of the strokes she has been unable to return to work and has had her driver’s license revoked by the Canadian Heart and Stroke Association.
Nonetheless, things were back on track and life was running smoothly; they were expecting their first grandbaby!! On May 11th of this year, their world was turned upside down again; Norm and Karen received the devastating news that Norm had tongue cancer. The 2-inch circumference, 1-inch-thick growth on the back of his tongue is going to force him into another fight for his life. On June 21st Norm had his first bout of radiation, thus the beginning of a 6-week treatment program.
You are damn lucky if cancer has not touched you or someone you know and love. It’s a horrible disease. I have known Norm and Karen for many years and honestly haven’t met a kinder, more loving couple; they would give you their last dime or the shirt of their backs for a family or friend in need. If you are receiving this message/link, it’s because Norm and Karen need a little help. With both of them unable to work and 2 months of treatment, at least a 6 month recovery; household funds are going to become very tight, very quickly. We know this has been a trying year and a half, considering the pandemic and the havoc it has created in our lives; but if you can help these two out with a small contribution, it will be forever appreciated. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers as Norm embarks on another fight for his life.
