Hi, my name is Noor.
I’m a disabled young adult who aged out of foster care and recently moved into my first apartment — something I never thought I’d be able to say. Surviving foster care was one chapter of my life. Learning how to truly live independently as a disabled adult is the next.
Right now, I’m facing a barrier that impacts my safety, independence, and daily quality of life: I need a standing power wheelchair.
A standing wheelchair would allow me to rise into a supported standing position. This isn’t about convenience or an upgrade — it’s about access. Without the ability to stand, I can’t reach my kitchen cabinets, properly use my space, or complete many daily tasks independently. I often have to ask for help with things most people don’t think twice about.
Beyond access, standing is also important for my health. I live with chronic pain, and prolonged sitting makes it significantly worse. Being able to stand would help reduce pain, improve circulation, and support my long-term physical health.
The hardest part is the cost.
Standing power wheelchairs are extremely expensive. I’m currently in the process of getting an official quote, but similar chairs — including one used by a close friend — can cost upwards of $65,000. Once you’re an adult, funding options for equipment like this are incredibly limited. Insurance typically covers only a small portion, if anything, and the remaining cost becomes overwhelming.
I am actively pursuing every possible funding option: insurance, grants, and youth transition supports. But even with those efforts, there may still be a significant gap — and that gap is what this fundraiser is meant to cover.
I don’t take asking for help lightly. I’ve spent much of my life learning how to survive without it. But I truly believe that a standing wheelchair could be life-changing for me — giving me independence, dignity, and the ability to fully use my own home.
If you’re able to support, share, or even just read my story, thank you. Every bit of support brings me closer to a future where I can live more independently and with less pain.
How the Funds Will Be Used
Funds raised will go toward:
• A standing power wheelchair (including seating and positioning supports)
• Any costs not covered by insurance or grants
• Delivery, fitting, and required adjustments
If funding sources cover more than expected, any remaining funds will be used for disability-related accessibility needs.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and for supporting me in any way you can — whether that’s donating, sharing, or simply caring. This community has helped me through so much, and I’m endlessly grateful.
With love,
Noor
