In October of last year, I received the difficult news that I had a bad kidney that needed to be removed. What was supposed to be a short hospital stay and a few weeks of recovery turned into a much longer ordeal. Complications meant I was out of work for three months, and I ended up needing two surgeries in just three days. As a result, I quickly fell behind on bills, and the hospital bills have been piling up ever since.

Just as I was starting to recover, I was hit with another blow—after three months, doctors discovered I have bladder cancer. Now, I’m facing another surgery and two years of treatments to make sure the cancer stays away. The stress of mounting medical bills, combined with being out of work, has left us struggling to keep up. My insurance hasn’t covered nearly enough, and I’m already deep in debt from the hospital stays and procedures.
