On July 3, 2026, my 13-year-old grandnephew, Noah Garcia, was critically injured during the devastating storm that swept through the Lansing area.

Before the powerful storm rolled in, Noah was outside enjoying the day with his mother at Cottonwood Campground on Aurelius Road in Lansing, Michigan. As soon as she saw the storm approaching, she immediately told Noah they needed to seek shelter.

Tragically, the storm moved faster than they could. A large tree was brought down by the powerful winds and struck Noah, leaving him with life-threatening injuries.

Noah was taken to Michigan Health–Sparrow, where he underwent emergency surgery. He remains in critical condition and is fighting for his life.

His injuries are extensive. Noah suffered severe internal bleeding, resulting in the removal of one kidney. Surgeons inserted pins in both of his legs to stabilize his legs and pelvis. He also suffered one punctured lung, one collapsed lung, and a shattered lumbar spine.

Following surgery, Noah's stomach and intestines remain outside his body while doctors wait for the swelling in his abdomen to decrease. Once the swelling has subsided, surgeons will continue the next stage of his treatment. Additional orthopedic surgery is planned for early next week.

Noah's life is in the hands of a highly skilled team of surgeons, physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals who are doing everything they can to save him.

If Noah is able to recover from these devastating injuries, he faces a long and difficult road ahead. He will require extensive hospitalization, multiple surgeries, intensive physical therapy, and rehabilitation. His home will likely need to be modified to accommodate his recovery, and his recuperation could extend over many months, or even longer.
