Hi family, friends, and everyone considering supporting this fund. My name is Niyah and I am raising funds to help me attend World Services for the Blind. The mission of World Services for the Blind is to empower people who are blind and visually impaired to achieve sustainable independence. WSB offers life skills on-campus, extensive career training programs online and on-campus, social work and case management services.
Recently I came face to face with the harsh reality that my vision may be completely lost someday and at the age of 22 this devastated me for a moment, because there are so many “first” still left to achieve. Thankfully I have a good support system who helped me see that “without vision, there is still sight” (that’s mine so make sure you add the - Niyah Green haha) and this program will help me live independently with or without my vision so I really need your support.
A little about my vision journey I have a rare eye disease coupled with uveitis. I have been visually impaired since I was 5 years old. I had my first eye surgery at the age of 6 and by the age of 12 I was legally blind in my left eye, had two glaucoma surgeries, and had surgeries for cataracts. After graduating high school I was completely blind in my left and at the age of 18, two weeks before my 19th birthday, I had my left eye removed. I had no issues with my right eye, until one day I woke up and could not see out of it. Talk about an emotional rollercoaster, it's been a journey and every day I am working to maintain my vision and mental health because my vision changes daily. A few months ago there were days I woke up and I could make out faces, other days it was just a blur. Now I am completely reliant on talk-to-text, and my family to do simple things for me and it feels like I am a helpless child, I just want to achieve some level of independence.
The World Services for the Blind program tuition is covered but the program will be in Little Rock, Arkansas. This will be the first time I am traveling alone, away from family, and in a co-ed dorm-style environment. I will need to purchase things like a mini refrigerator, microwave, clothes to sleep in a co-ed environment (It's always been my mom and my sister/s), and more; this will also help cover other expenses during the program. I am scheduled to leave April 24th which was alot quicker than anyone anticipated so I am asking for your support to help me attend this life-changing program!
Thank you for your support!
