I met Nishia just a few months ago. She is a food service worker at the hospital where I work as a dietitian. Our first interaction was when she came into the dietitian office to ask for some advice about her husband who was no longer able to eat by mouth and was reliant on a feeding tube for nutrition as he was battling cancer. She was concerned about her husband losing weight, so she had questions on how much feeding tube formula he should receive. Nishia was very upbeat and positive. I often get patients telling me how lovely she is and how well she ensures their food needs are met. Despite adjusting to now being the breadwinner in her family due to her husband being unable to work and managing her household of 3 children (ages 15, 9, 3), she manages to remain positive. Though she frequently says she doesn’t feel strong enough to go through this; I believe she is one of the strongest people I’ve met. Last Friday she received the unthinkable news of her husband’s poor prognosis, and he will be discharged from the hospital on home hospice. Nishia and her husband have been married for 18 years; they met when they were just 17 years old and have three children together. She has little time to grieve as she is struggling to stay afloat with bills and caring for her children. I felt one way I could help her is to try to raise some funds to at least help lift the financial burden of these changes in her life. Unfortunately, she has to also think about the eventual funeral costs to celebrate the life of her husband. This past year has been difficult for everyone, but imagine having to lose your best friend, the love of your life. If you can find it in your heart to even just donate a small amount, we are unable to bring Nishia’s husband back to full health, but at least we can allow her to breathe a little easier and allow her to grieve without the burdens of financial stress.
