Hello! My name is Nila Morton. I am a 26-year-old Black woman living with a disability. I currently reside in the DMV area. I moved to the DMV area for graduate school but to have an opportunity to better my future as a disabled person since living in the South was limiting and not accessible. Here, I am able to have access to transportation, job opportunities, and to grow as a person. I do not regret my decision as it has led me to be able to be a licensed social worker and have a job as well as a community. Unfortunately, moving led to risks such as not being able to use one of my health insurances. I am only able to use my Medicare, which only pays for 80% of my medical supplies. I use a ventilation breathing machine at night because, with my disease, I have low lung function. This machine is my lifeline and I need it to live. I received a bill saying I owe over $2000, which I didn't know I had and wasn't aware that my insurance stopped covering it fully. I have other outstanding medical bills as well. I'm currently in the process of trying to get a new chair, which I know Medicare won't cover fully, but I will deal with that battle later. I do not like asking for help. I usually try to find different resources on my own before asking, but this is life or death right now. I need my breathing machine to live and I cannot have it taken away because I currently cannot afford it right now. If people can donate or just share, I would greatly appreciate it. This is truly hard for me, but I do want to live. I do want to be able to breathe. I just want to be able to feel comfortable knowing I can still have my machine.
