Help Niko get Medpor ear reconstruction surgery

Donation protected

My name is Ivan, and I'm raising money for my nephew Niko. He is the most passionate and loving child I've ever met. He loves to go to his martial arts class. He loves going to school and playing with his friends. He has a passion for music that gives him the courage to try any instrument that will make a sound. He is six years old and was born without ears and other medical abnormalities. He has grade 4 Microtia. Microtia is a congenital birth anomaly when one or both ears do not fully develop or are physically missing. Niko is missing both ears, which is even more uncommon. He will be having surgery in March 2022 to get his left ear, and in June 2022 will be getting his right ear. He will be traveling to Los Angeles to get “Medpor” Ear Reconstruction surgery with Dr. Sheryl Lewin. This surgery type of ear reconstruction has not been around as long as Rib Cartilage Ear Reconstruction, so most insurances will not cover it. All insurance will fully cover a rib cartilage ear reconstruction, but the Rib cartilage surgery is excruciating as they must first remove rib cartilage, and it takes 2-4 surgeries to complete all stages of the ear reconstruction. Unlike the Medpor ear reconstruction, it is not as invasive and Niko will be out of the hospital that same day and usually requires one surgery for each ear. My sister has had to switch to multiple insurances with her employer. None would cover any cost of the surgery. The surgery will cost $64,500 plus hospital fees and the charge for the anesthesiologists. She has now bought direct insurance out of pocket to cover this surgery, but she will pay the same amount as the surgery itself in only a few years. My sister will have to pay her yearly max deduction for Niko’s surgery which will be $8,200 for the surgery. She is grateful that she will be able to get the surgery for her son to get his ears reconstructed with a less painful surgery. My sister is a single mom who works full time, yet living in Sonoma County is still very difficult financially. She has taken out a loan to cover some of the costs. I'm so excited for the new life Niko gets to start. I cut his hair, and he asks me to cut it short every haircut, but we are afraid that he will get picked on, so we keep it long. That first haircut when I get to give him the cut he wants will be a fantastic feeling. I want him and my sister to be able to start a life fresh, not with crippling debt. Besides the out-of-pocket costs for the surgery, she's also taking two weeks off of work, getting them a place to stay in LA for the surgery and follow-up appointments. I know him being able to wear sunglasses or an N95 mask or have a short haircut is going to change everyone's life; I would like that aspect to be the only part that changes their life forever, not the debt. Thank you for reading and your consideration.
