Help Nikki while Lulu fights brain cancer

Hello all,

My name's Liz Kerswell and I am seeking support for my dear colleague Nikki Owen. Nikki and I work at Goodstart Brisbane Adelaide Street. Nikki is the face of our childcare centre, our admin extraordinaire. She is a much-loved and cherished friend who brings so much joy and warmth to all our families, children and colleagues every day.

Nikki has three beautiful children Harry, Lulu and Toby. Lulu's health has been progressively deteriorating this year. Lulu was hospitalised in February and had a few surgeries for her endometriosis. This caused Lulu to miss a lot of school and important school events. Fortunately, she was allowed out of the hospital for her year 12 formal, which she attended in a lovely silver dress while Nikki pushed her in a wheelchair.

Despite these surgeries, Lulu continued to experience concerning symptoms - dizziness, blurry vision and headaches. On Wednesday 05/04/23 Nikki took Lulu to emergency where a CT scan and MRI revealed a tumour on her cerebellum. Lulu was allowed home briefly for the Easter long weekend to celebrate her 18th birthday and Easter with her family before returning to the hospital to have surgery to remove the brain tumours.

On Thursday 13/04/23 Lulu underwent 11 hours of surgery, an additional 6 hours of surgery on Friday 14/04/23 to attempt to remove the remaining tumour and an emergency surgery in the early hours of Saturday 15/04/23 morning to remove a blood clot. Lulu was then in ICU on a ventilator and intubation and being closely monitored for several days.

Despite the doctors doing all that they could, Lulu is still very unwell and has been diagnosed with brain cancer. Lulu currently cannot walk unassisted and her sight and hearing have been greatly affected. To help fight brain cancer, Lulu needs to continue undergoing radiation and chemotherapy.

With Nikki not being able to work, her family have experienced a substantial loss of income. The expenses of life and the bills continue to come in. The ongoing visits to the hospital with the high expenses of parking and Ubers and putting a big strain on the family budget.
