"Hi, my name is Nikki, and I’m reaching out because I need help.

For nearly three years, I have been the primary caregiver for my three children, providing them with stability, love, and access to education, medical care, and emotional support. My eldest son is autistic and requires specialized care, which I have managed and advocated for every step of the way.

Now, I’m facing an overwhelming legal battle. My custody case is going to trial, despite a pretrial recommendation for a gradual transition to 50-50 custody. This will significantly prolong the legal process and place an enormous financial burden on both sides. I do not qualify for Legal Aid, and the cost of securing a lawyer is far beyond what I can afford on my own.

Why I Need Legal Support

Since separating, I have worked tirelessly to provide for my children while also finishing my Computer Science degree. It was an incredibly difficult time—balancing childcare, school, and household responsibilities on my own while ensuring my kids had stability and security. During this time, I also struggled with inconsistent child support payments, which only increased the financial strain.

Despite this, I pushed through:

    •    I was the primary caregiver, managing every aspect of my children’s daily lives.

    •    I ensured my eldest son received the autism-related care, therapy, and educational support he needed.

But now, with a court trial looming, I am out of options. I must secure legal representation by April 20th, or I will have to face this legal fight alone.

The Cost of Legal Representation

The trial is expected to last three days and involve seven witnesses. Legal fees, including lawyer retainers, trial preparation, and court costs, are estimated at $40,000.

    •    I have saved $5,000, but the remaining amount is beyond my financial means.

    •    Without a lawyer, I will be at a serious disadvantage in court.

    •    Even if I secure a lawyer by April 20th, I will need ongoing support to cover the full legal process.
