This is my wife Niki. She is direct, funny, and wholly likeable. She is originally from the Netherlands and followed me here with the help of my online family, a group I still consider part of my family. She is near and dear not to just my heart, but to many of our mutual friends scattered around the world in fifteen time zones. Niki was a nurse for twenty years, but due to rules on medical training here has not been able to practice.
Growing up at negative ten elevation has unfortunately some consequences and her living with me in Montana activated a bad thing in her body; Lupis. Lupis (called the disease of a thousand faces) has done many things since it started, is the suspected source of Fibromyalgia, Congestive heart failure, Sleep apnea, and Diabetes for her, a wicked combination! It has taken nearly a decade to find a combination of medications to combat the symptoms of these without messing up the other meds results (especially as a couple of these have no cure and can be fatal)..
In addition, Lupis creates some nasty blisters on her fingers (some growing to twice the size of her thumb) which makes day-to-day life painful and often frustratingly difficult for even easy tasks. A suspected issue of some of the meds she is on is dizzy spells and that has caused nearly twenty falls this year, most fortunately onto the couch or other softer surfaces. But not always as now she has had a hard fall ending in a broken hip in only her mid fifties! The fact I work seven days a week to keep up with the bills did not make this easy to deal with!
Being a citizen of the EU and not the US (combined with her legal situation still processing in the US system where we know two people who have been in process for 20 years) means the normal medical assistant programs are not available, so medicare and many others programs can not help her in this particular situation. So this will be mostly out-of-pocket. Ouch! Thank goodness for the many medical prescription programs that do, but they do not help with Ambulance rides and surgeries.
Life is sometimes too entertaining. Murphy knew far too much when he made his law about bad things happening. Wheelchair, rollator, walker, not to mention portable toilet, sock helpers (who knew about those?? Wild they came up with that!) and other items to help her recovery before the other bills from the surgery and recovery rehabilitation which has allowed her to come back home. Help from local friends has allowed me to get her in a routine at home while she improves.
Until the broken hip, we were managing the expense of medications and doctor's appointments okay if not great. We have adapted our lives several times to stay ahead of some issues and to catch up in others. This injury however is setting us back quite a lot. With only two of the ten or so medical bills to come in (with a possible cost around $15k eventually) we simply need help and hope some folks are able to give us an assist. If you can help, bless you! We appreciate everyone's good wishes in her recovery and the positive comments have helped her out. Keep them coming!
