Help Nick's Family Find #Justice4Nicky

We lament the death of Jose “Nick” Piña Cardenas, father of five and beloved son of our longtime member Lydia Piña. Every death of a loved one is terrible, but there is something particularly and inconsolably sorrowful when your child dies. Nick died after falling into a coma at a nearby hospital, just three weeks after he was tackled and restrained by Alameda County sheriff deputies during intake procedures at the notorious Santa Rita jail.

Jail officials never informed Señora Lydia that her son was hospitalized, where he lay for nine days before she found out. The jail is not considering this an in-custody death. To date, at least seven people have died there since 2021. Says Sra. Lydia, “All I want is justice. Nick didn’t deserve to die in that way. Nick’s family is now searching for answers to receive the peace they deserve to lay their relative to rest. Sra.
