Hi all,
In early March I’ll be embarking on a short tour of eastern and central Europe with my dear friend and frequent collaborator Toby Driver of Kayo Dot.
I haven’t toured since 2018. I’d had two tours lined up in 2020 that were nixed, like so many things, by the pandemic. This compromised the reach of my band’s newly released record The Quiet Earth. We then went on indefinite hiatus. After the pandemic I moved to Tbilisi, Georgia, which until recently had proven a relatively stable ground from which to work as a musician. I released Kanda Teenage Honey in March 2024, then Georgia erupted in protests against the poisonous Russian regime that’s pivoting the country towards authoritarianism. Much of last year was thus dominated by what amounts to a revolution, with a cultural strike towards the end of the year that I of course I joined in solidarity, as I truly believe in Georgia and the Georgians.
We emerge into a deeply destabilized world in 2025 and I have the opportunity to finally tour again - performing is the single-most impactful and effective way to built an audience - that sense of connection and electricity in the concert space is something truly magical, and while streaming services have gutted and hollowed our revenue from record sales, touring feels like the last bastion of hope for all of us artists who essentially can’t do anything else: with zero pretension I can say that it’s our calling to create and nurture and share and perform music.
My work has enjoyed kind words from Terry Riley, Mogwai, Faith No More, Xiu Xiu, Dennis Cooper, Robert Wyatt and many more, and I’ve collaborated widely - with members of bands such as Massive Attack, Can, Archive, Kayo Dot, Asva, with the BBC, The Quietus, Libération and Mojo amplifying my work.
However to tour, one needs capital to cover flights and daily expenses and accommodation where promoters can’t offer it themselves. Also another strong revenue stream while touring can be merch sales. The creation of merch again is dependent upon capital.
With the situation in Georgia I’ve had no concerts in some time so my revenue is significantly down. I’m asking you, humbly, to help with these costs - and help get Nick Hudson back on the road as a touring entity - I know that it is in concert where my work truly shines, and honestly, with much of the current climate being so volatile and wretched, I’m thinking of using this initial short venture with Toby as a launchpad to tour semi-indefinitely. Any contribution at all will both be massively helpful and deeply appreciated.
Thank you so much,
Nick
