I am writing this for my brother-in-law, Nick Wortes, who is a fun-loving, friendly and active guy, that is, until last September. Nick was a healthy 30-year old living life to the fullest, travelling the world whilst working. He was out surfing when he suddenly collapsed, unable to breathe, and was rushed to a hospital in Gibraltar where was diagnosed with pulmonary embolisms (i.e. blood clots in his lungs). After weeks in hospital, Nick was put on an intensive dose of blood thinning medication, but sadly suffered a second collapse a few months later. After more tests it was decided to medi-vac him back to Australia to be with his family.
After returning to Australia, Nick was diagnosed with CTEPH, a chronic and life threatening disease where blood clots prevent the lungs from pumping oxygen to the heart, leading to heart failure. Nick’s health has seriously deteriorated over the past 3 months. Nick used to be able to surf, run and exercise effortlessly, and now he cannot walk 50 metres without being totally breathless and in severe pain.
The only operation that can help Nick is open heart-lung surgery. A team of surgeons from Royal North Shore, Prince Alfred and St Vincent’s Hospital have all stated that Nick’s best chance of survival is by having this surgery in San Diego Hospital in America. Luckily, Nick was accepted by the team at San Diego Hospital and is scheduled to undergo the 12-hour operation on the 1st October 2019. As you may be aware, the American healthcare system is extremely expensive and the operation is going to cost Nick at least $180,000 AUD.
