As long as I’ve known Nick and Jess, they’ve dreamed of having a family. But the road hasn’t been easy. Due to underlying medical conditions, conceiving has been more challenging—but not impossible. They remained optimistic as they built their lives together.

Graduate school, moving to a new state, and even bouts of Covid made the journey harder. Finding stable jobs—and the right medical insurance—was a struggle. But after years of persistence, they finally reached a place where their dream shifted from “Hopefully one day” to, “Maybe we can just have one.”

Last year, with insurance in place, hope grew. Doctors could finally guide them on next steps. Jess had surgery to improve their chances, and while the procedure went well, the news that followed was devastating: Jess has endometrial cancer.

They caught it early, but the diagnosis was a blow to their reality, their future, and their dreams. Their medical team remained optimistic, but Nick and Jess felt like the ground had been pulled out from under them.

The chance to have children still exists, but the odds are lower, and the window has narrowed. Jess is currently working with her doctors to control the cancer. If successful, she and Nick will meet with fertility specialists to increase their chances of conceiving.

In July 2025, Jess started treatment to beat the cancer. She has until January 2026 to be cancer free in order to proceed with the fertility treatments. If cancer remains, she will have to have a hysterectomy. If the cancer is gone by then, they can move forward with treatment. They have started to meet with fertility specialists, but they can only do some testing at this time. The road ahead is tough, but Nick and Jess are determined to make the most of this time.
