Help Nick and His Mother in Their Darkest Hour

We met Nick at one of the most beloved Greek restaurants in Gastown — the kind of place where the food is delicious, but the people make it unforgettable. Nick was one of those people. Always greeting guests with a smile, kindness, and a sense of care that made every visit feel like a warm embrace. He remembered your name. He asked about your day. He brought you desserts you didn’t order, because he wanted you to feel special. Every day, Nick helped feed the homeless with leftovers from the restaurant. We all thought he was the owner.

But the truth was far more painful.

Nick wasn’t the owner. He was a worker — overworked, underpaid, and taken advantage of. His employer paid him 35% less than what was promised, abusing the dependency of the Nick had on that job. After a year of this abuse he decided to speak up and he got fired on the spot and was kicked out of the workers house.

His gentle smile gone, he became someone who had lost almost everything.

We invited him into our home, and bought him a plane ticket back to Greece. But there’s more to Nick’s story — and why we’re asking for your help.

While living in Canada for 8 years, Nick always sent money home to care for his mother, who has been fighting cancer for 2.5 years. Even while being underpaid and mistreated, Nick never failed to support her.

Now, she owes €5,000 to the hospital, and with Nick returning home jobless, this weight makes his pain unbearable.
