From Nic:
On August 10, 2024, at 8:00am, I said a final goodbye to the fiercest woman I’ve ever known, my mother.
Denise was funny, and loyal, and persistent. She taught me how to befriend strangers, how to hustle, how to fight for what I believe in, how to dream. Like many mothers, she was a complicated woman with a whole backstory before my first chapter. She is my connection to a long line of Black women who made room for themselves in a world that did not do so willingly. We sometimes wrestled each other with the strength and determination inherited from those foremothers. I thrive now because she never let me accept anything less than what I deserve.
My mother loved me. My biggest wish for her was that she love herself with the same expansive love she had for me — the way that I loved her.

From the Friends & Chosen Family of Nic:
We are saddened to hear of Denise’s passing after many years of health struggles. We stand in solidarity with & support of Nic who has had the sole responsibility of managing their mother’s affairs these last few years. Denise leaves behind her husband, her sister, and Nic — but no will or estate. As an only child with limited family resources, Nic must see to final arrangements & expenses on their own.
Since Nic’s departure to LA on their birthday July 31, they have accrued costs while transferring their mother to hospice, and arranging cremation & memorial services. Current expenses add up to around $8500.
Nic passionately dedicates time & energy to supporting their community year round. It is our hope that our community be able to show support for our friend during this difficult time. If you are able to assist Nic with Denise’s final costs, it would be greatly appreciated.
The breakdown is:
Hospice Transfer logistics - $4500
Cremation - $2200
Memorial - $1800
