Hello - we're Nic and Dawn. Married with cats in West Virginia. We've been together since 2018 and we got married early in 2021 to make sure during the pandemic we would be the ones making decisions for each other if anything should go wrong. Both of us being trans, we wanted to make sure if something happened to us - we wouldn't have family misgendering/deadnaming us and making medical choices for us.
Dawn was able to leave the job that we both worked at and got a really good, well-paying job being a contact tracer. When federal funds dried up, she was laid off and we dealt with a mixture of unemployment, unable to find a new job, and the few she found were hostile to trans women.
Going into the pandemic, we had just started to save up to hopefully move out of our apartment building and for future gender-affirming surgeries. The almost two years she was off and on with work took out our savings and racked up credit card debt to cover basic needs.
This past year, she did find fulfilling employment, and I myself have been promoted - but we are down one person that we moved into this apartment with (causing higher rent payments and utility shares) and almost half of my income is going to paying down credit card debt and a loan that is barely making a dent. I also just found out that the bonus I was hoping for in March is not going to happen, so we're not going to have that to cover costs of moving out of this place once again. Now with the executive order - we're also going to need funds to get Dawn out of the country and work on settling things here to get myself and the cats out too.
So - we're asking for help. There's a lot of things happening right now that I hope get funded long before us (Palestinians in dire need, people that are in danger of losing their home, people that need money for healthcare to live) but I hope that there are people that can help us dig through some of this survival debt, help cover monthly rent costs until at least June (when I can get out of our lease and move), and costs to cover my passport and chipping our cats for Europe, so that we can finally start saving up to move out of this country, I hate doing this, but at the rate we are going, and being down to effectively one income again, there's no way we're going to dig our way out fast enough without help.
