On Wednesday, 7 January at 7:30pm, a fire broke out in the shop underneath Nic and Aish’s home.

They had less than a minute to grab Pearl and get out before the smoke became impossible to breathe. Thankfully, they are all safe, but the damage left behind is devastating.

Although no flames reached their apartment, thick smoke and soot travelled up through the walls and floors. Everything inside has been affected. Clothes, bedding, furniture, and most heartbreakingly, Nic’s music studio and instruments, which represent a lifetime of collecting, creating, and working as a musician.

The smell and contamination are severe, and they have been told that much of what remains may not be recoverable. On top of this, they do not have home and contents insurance and are unlikely to be able to return to live in the house.

Right now, they are in shock and facing the reality of starting again from almost nothing. Temporary accommodation, replacing essentials, attempting to clean or replace studio gear, and caring for a very stressed Pearl are all immediate challenges.

Aisha and Nic have built an incredible community around their shared talents, passion, and love for the performing arts. So many of us have benefited from how much they give to that community and the joy their craft brings to our lives.
