Hello! We’re Pierogi Pictures, an independent filmmaking group based in Toronto. We’re currently raising funds to bring writer Ethan Persyko’s three-part episodic film "Ukrainian, But Not Ukraine" to life on screen.

The Plot:

"Ukrainian, But Not Ukraine" is a three-episode short series following Alex, a young adult navigating isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Episode 1, after too many unanswered calls, Alex's mother comes to check in, prompting a long-overdue conversation where Alex begins to open up about their mental health struggles. Episode 2 shifts inward, as Alex reflects through a quiet monologue on the small, almost invisible moments that helped them get through depression. In Episode 3, a memory in the kitchen between a Alex and his grandfather reveals a deeper connection to family and their Ukrainian heritage.

Theme:

The series explores what it truly means to “keep alive,” emphasizing that survival is not always loud or visible, but often exists in small, intimate moments. It highlights the power of vulnerability, the importance of reaching out, and the role of family and cultural roots in shaping resilience. Across all three episodes, the story suggests that healing comes from both within and through others, that even in isolation, connection, memory, and identity can offer a sense of stability, purpose, and hope.

Our team is currently in pre-production, led by Ethan (Creator/Writer), Sofiia (Producer) and Natalie (Project Coordinator). We are raising funds to support essential production costs, including equipment rentals, transportation, and craft services.

This project is being created on a volunteer basis, and every contribution goes directly toward bringing the series to life. Any remaining funds after production costs will be shared among the team as compensation for their work.
