Lend Your Support on Her Road to Recovery from Brain Surgery

Meet Nevaeh, a 16-year-old Barbadian student of the Alleyne School, whose bright spirit and academic commitment aptly reflect the beautiful and kind soul that she is - both inside and out.

Nevaeh’s journey, however, has not been easy and took an unexpected turn this year whilst she was preparing for her CSEC Examinations.

At just seven years old, a small intraventricular brain tumor was found, though doctors determined it to be benign. It was decided that the tumor would be monitored as Nevaeh grew and left alone, since the likelihood of it posing a threat was slim. Fate it would seem had other plans, when Nevaeh began experiencing severe headaches, hearing and vision difficulties, earlier this year.

Rushed to the hospital in June 2023, scans showed her tumor had begun to rapidly grow, leading to hydrocephalus—a condition demanding urgent surgical intervention to save her life. Her doctor determined that while he was capable of operating, the public hospital was ill-equipped for him to perform such a delicate procedure as there is a lack of CT equipment available onsite. As such, an overseas referral was made.

With immense courage, Nevaeh's devoted mother, Sacha, ensured it was possible for her daughter to be air ambulanced to Colombia, where a team of skilled doctors successfully performed the life-saving surgery. Nevaeh emerged from the operation a true fighter, in good spirits and filled with hope for a full recovery and future ahead. Despite her resilience, Nevaeh continues to face challenges. 0.5cm of the tumor remains as this proved impossible to remove, furthermore, her vision and hearing remain impaired and she is now battling a serious infection requiring prolonged ICU care.

This GoFundMe has been set up to support Nevaeh on multiple fronts. As a single mother of two, including a three year old, Sacha has had to take extended time from her job to be by Nevaeh's side and as you can imagine, the financial strain is immense - especially considering the extensive care Nevaeh needs for her physical and mental recovery. Therapy to regain her strength, follow-up tests and aids for her visual and hearing impairments, as well as follow-up examinations in both Barbados and Colombia and necessary and continuous MRI scans to monitor the remaining portion of the tumor, are all among the many looming expenses.
