Help Support My Mother’s Recovery After a Devastating Burn Accident

On July 2nd, 2025, while we were visiting Puerto Rico, my 83-year-old mother, Nereida Solivan, suffered a devastating accident while cooking. She incurred severe third- and fourth-degree burns on her face, arms, hands, chest, and feet. Due to the extent of her injuries, she was unable to return home with me and had to be hospitalized in Puerto Rico for emergency care. After a little over a month in Wilma N. Vazquez Hospital in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, and due to limited resources and staff, she was discovered to have a pulmonary embolism because she was bedridden for so long.
Thankfully, after fighting with insurance, an air ambulance was covered, and she was transported back to the U.S. to the University of Louisville Hospital’s Burn Unit. At UofL, she was immediately treated. She has already undergone three surgeries, and heartbreakingly, the doctors had to remove several fingers from her hands. She is facing a long road to recovery ahead, including physical, emotional, and occupational therapy to regain the use of her hands and overall mobility. Per the surgeon, she will need one more surgery for the skin grafts. Doctors want her to regain strength after all of the aggressive procedures she has sustained so far.

Once she is discharged, and per her physician's orders, she is required to undergo her last surgery and follow-up. For her recovery, she will need physical, emotional, and occupational therapy to get back to a new normal. Also, I will need to make significant modifications to our home in Jeffersonville, Indiana, to accommodate her new physical limitations. Many of these costs—such as accessibility renovations and in-home care—will not be covered by insurance and will need to be paid out of pocket.
We are humbly asking for your support during this incredibly difficult time. Any contribution, no matter how small, will help ease the financial burden and allow us to focus on my mother’s healing and recovery.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your generosity, kindness, and prayers.
