Who We Are

We are the Nepali Language School Sacramento, a community of Nepali-origin individuals living in California. While we are miles away from our homeland, our hearts remain deeply rooted in Nepal.

For us, this is not just a news headline. The victims are our family, our friends, our relatives, and our childhood neighbors. The villages swept away are the very places where our parents grew up and where our loved ones still live. Our relationship with the affected communities is profoundly deep and emotional—we are mourning alongside them, and we cannot stand idly by.

The Crisis

On August 26, 2026, a catastrophic glacial collapse in the Himalayas triggered devastating flash floods along the Bhote Koshi River, sweeping through Nepal's Rasuwa district before cascading downstream into Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan.

Entire settlements—including Timure, Syaphrubesi, Hakubesi, Mailung, Shantibazar, Betrawati, and Trishuli Bazaar—have been inundated or significantly damaged. Eyewitnesses described a 30-meter (100-foot) wall of water instantly washing away people, homes, and markets.

The Human Toll

350+ confirmed deaths in Nepal

Over 1,300 people missing, including foreign nationals from two dozen countries

At least 50,000 people badly affected

Nearly 40,000 people (8,692 households) require emergency support

Infrastructure Destroyed

At least 19 bridges destroyed and 40 kilometers of roadway damaged

13 hydropower plants damaged, causing widespread power disruption

Roads, communications, and transport links severed—leaving entire communities inaccessible

The Government's Response

The government of Nepal has declared Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading as disaster crisis zones and deployed thousands of security personnel, helicopters, drones, and search teams. However, difficult terrain, damaged roads, and disrupted communications are severely hampering rescue efforts.

Emergency shelter and temporary housing

Ready-to-eat food and safe drinking water

Hygiene kits to prevent waterborne disease outbreaks

Medical supplies and emergency healthcare

Blankets, mattresses, and basic necessities

4,000 baby kits for children under five
